“It’s a little late for me to give up on my job as a doctor”
As part of a new initiative to improve health care in the U.S., some of the nation’s top health care providers have pledged to reduce their workforces by at least 25 percent by 2025.
“I have seen how hard the work is, and how it is a long-term commitment,” said Dr. Scott G. Cramer, the chairman of the National Association of Primary Care Physicians.
“This means it’s going to be much harder for me and other people to continue doing the work that I love to do.”
“It really does not feel right to me that I’m going to have to give in and take a pay cut because I’m not a very good doctor,” said Dan B. Rabinowitz, a doctor who recently joined the National Center for Health Statistics and Health Policy at the University of Washington.
“It feels wrong.
I can’t do it.”
In the meantime, doctors and hospitals are looking for new ways to make up for the loss of the labor force, which has been on the decline since the 1980s.
“In the last few years, we’ve seen a dramatic drop in the number of doctors and nurses in our community,” said Nancy B. Bresnahan, director of the University Health Network’s Center for the Study of Labor Market Dynamics.
“The number of people working full-time has gone up significantly.
And in the process, we’re seeing an even greater reduction in the work force participation rate.”
Doctors are now looking to make more money, but that’s not always the best thing for them.
Many of the doctors surveyed said they would like to continue working full time, but the financial pressure is getting to them.
“That means it would be more difficult for me or others who work part-time to continue to do so,” said one doctor, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal.
“There’s been a great change in the economy,” the doctor said, “but also a huge increase in workload and stress.”
A lot of doctors have to make a living in order to do their jobs.
Many also work in very crowded hospitals, and that can lead to the risk of infections.
Doctors have even started looking to take jobs elsewhere, which is a concern for some patients.
“They’re worried about getting sick, and if you don’t get sick you’re not doing your job,” said the doctor, adding that it’s not just the patients who need to take the extra care.
Some doctors also have concerns about the future of Medicare, which in the past has offered generous benefits for those working part-timers.
Many doctors have been told they may have to take on more patients or shift their focus to other fields.
“A lot of us are starting to see the potential for our jobs to be at risk,” said Bresnanahan.
“We’re not talking about just the people who work in a lab; we’re talking about our colleagues and the health care professionals that work at a hospital.”
In addition to the potential health consequences, the number and type of doctors are changing too.
“If we’re going to get rid of part- time doctors, we have to be able to get the people that we need to keep the care we need,” said Cramer.
“And I think we need more doctors.”
A growing number of physicians have also taken to social media to share their concerns about changes in the workforce.
“Is there a point where we can’t get enough doctors?” asked one doctor on Twitter.
“Maybe we need a moratorium on the use of part time doctors,” wrote another.
“More doctors are working full hours,” wrote a third.
“Can’t we just get rid ’em?,” asked a fourth.
“Let’s all just quit working,” wrote one.
The number of new doctors has increased in recent years, but it is unclear how many of them are full- time and how many are part- or part-timer.
While there are no national data on the number, one recent study suggested that the majority of physicians who quit their jobs do so because they can’t find a good job.
But even if all of the physicians who are part time did quit their positions, they are still likely to make less than those who are full time.
“As we know, it’s really difficult for doctors to get into good jobs,” said Paul B. Smith, the president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Smith says the current system of health care funding does not provide enough support for people who have a hard time finding a job and who are trying to balance work and family.
“So they can just go to a job they love and they don’t really know what that’s going
